Determination of ABO blood group and Rh type is necessary for transfusion and transplant candidates. In addition, group and typing of expectant mothers and newborns helps diagnosis of ABO hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn. Rh typing is also used to determine prenatal and postpartum patient’s candidacy for Rh immune globulin.
