Founded in May 2006, by Zahra Mehdizadeh Kashi, Ph.D., H.C.L.D., Kashi Labs began by offering pre and post-transplant/transfusion related services for the oncology and HLA communities. As time progressed, so did the laboratory with services expanding to include drug sensitivity, disease association, and private bone marrow testing. With the initial success in serving the field of transplantation and transfusion, Kashi Labs developed a wide range of genomic services to further support the advancement of medical oncology. Today, Kashi Labs provides a wide range of development services, reference lab services and platforms to complement our original battery of testing. Zahra Mehdizadeh Kashi, PhD, HCLD, is a board-certified molecular immunohematologist with over 32 years of experience in clinical laboratories with extensive leadership.
Dr. Kashi has significant expertise in clinical laboratory development, quality system auditing, GMP development, project management, regulatory compliance, strategic planning and business development. She is a highly-sought clinical laboratory consultant, with dozens of peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, as well as numerous invited presentations.
Dr. Kashi is active in various regulatory agencies including the American Society of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ASHI), College of American Pathologists (CAP) and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) where she has served in many roles ranging from inspecting laboratories to serving on the Board of Directors.
In addition, Dr. Kashi has served as a clinical assistant professor in the department of pathology/CLS at Oregon Health & Science University and has held a number of other education and research positions at local universities, hospitals, and corporations. Dr. Kashi holds a doctorate degree in molecular immunohematology from Portland State University, and completed her doctoral thesis under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Heinrich at Oregon Health Sciences University. She also completed the Michigan Ross Executive MBA Program at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and Medical Doctorate from The University of Pennsylvania, a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School, and an Associate degree from Oxford.
Dr. Johnson is an experienced healthcare business leader, physician/scientist, and entrepreneur. Over the course of his career he has managed four clinical and scientific research businesses through growth to successful exits, developed three pharmaceutical products to FDA approval, written several peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts, and is the holder of two U.S. patents. Dr. Johnson is a frequent speaker at clinical and scientific research business-related conferences.
Dr. Johnson previously held management positions at McKinsey & Company, MDS/Celerion, AbbVie Pharmaceuticals, Optum, and Aster Insights. He has previously served as an advisor to several private equity investors including Warburg Pincus, Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, Ampersand Capital, and Prairie Capital.
Driven by a commitment to quality, patient experience, and operational excellence, Helaman Escobar brings more than two decades of experience leading and expanding laboratory-based business operations.
With a foundation in Molecular Biology from Brigham Young University and a Master of Business Administration from the Marriott School of Management, Helaman has built and led high-performance teams and world-class laboratory operations across diverse sectors. His expertise spans clinical operations, ISO- and GLP-accredited laboratory services, and high-throughput automated biomanufacturing and genomics production environments.
Throughout his career, Helaman Escobar has held leadership roles across private and publicly traded companies, nonprofit healthcare systems, and academic research institutions. He has successfully established and scaled laboratory operations to maturity for organizations including Eurofins, Intermountain Healthcare, and Twist Bioscience.
Masa Hayashi brings financial and business acumen to the laboratory, leveraging his 20+ years of experience. He leads the finance, accounting, and revenue cycle management functions for Kashi Clinical laboratories.
Masa Hayashi serves as Vice President of Finance at Kashi Clinical Laboratories, where he leads financial strategy, reporting, and revenue cycle management to ensure long-term growth and stability. With deep expertise in corporate finance and strategic planning, Masa oversees a talented team dedicated to optimizing performance and delivering actionable insights that drive business success.
Before joining Kashi, Masa held senior leadership roles at Netwrix and Nike, managing multi-billion-dollar budgets and implementing transformative financial systems. Earlier in his career, he was a sell-side investment banker focusing on the middle market across a wide range of industries. Masa holds both a JD and a MBA from Stanford University, and Bachelors degrees from UCLA.
Over 25 years of experience in clinical and research diagnostics
Sean joined Kashi Clinical Laboratories in the spring of 2025 and has more than 25 years of experience in clinical and research diagnostics. He earned an undergraduate degree in Cytotechnology at the University of Akron. Sean’s business development experience includes developing and leading high performing sales teams, launching oncology diagnostic services, driving reimbursement strategies with managed care organizations, strategic partnerships, advancement of translational research platforms, and clinical trial/CRO services across all phases.
Over two decades of advancing quality and operational excellence in the clinical laboratory setting, with a specialization in cellular therapies at a leading academic medical center. Sara has developed, implemented, and maintained comprehensive quality management systems that ensure laboratory processes meet stringent regulatory, accreditation, and safety requirements.
For the past 20 years, Sara has also served as an inspector of cellular therapy medical centers, conducting in-depth evaluations of laboratory operations, documentation, and compliance practices. This role has provided a unique vantage point—allowing her to see firsthand how different laboratories approach quality, identify best practices, and guide programs toward meeting or exceeding national and international standards.
Her dual expertise as both a laboratory quality leader and an external inspector has fostered a deep understanding of how to bridge operational realities with regulatory expectations. By combining technical knowledge, process improvement skills, and a commitment to patient safety, Sara has played a pivotal role in strengthening laboratory systems that support life-changing cellular therapies.
PharmD and PhD in Pharmacology-Toxicology with a deep passion for advancing medical science through research, diagnostics, and leadership.
Dr. Atashpour served nine years as an Assistant Professor and Laboratory Manager, where she guided students and led research in pharmacology, oncology, and molecular biology. Now, as the MMDx® Analytical & Technical Supervisor and a Director-in-Training at Kashi Clinical Laboratories, she leads innovative diagnostic and research efforts in transplantation and immunology, utilizing advanced tools like microarrays and PCR-based methods. With over 20 publications in international journals, her work spans pharmacology, oncology, toxicology, genetics, nanomedicine, cancer stem cells, in vivo and in vitro studies, cellular and molecular research, and herbal treatments, reflecting her commitment to innovative and impactful science.
With over a decade of international experience in transplant immunology, histocompatibility testing, and translational research, Dr. Tripathi brings both scientific depth and clinical precision to the lab’s operations.
Dr. Gaurav Tripathi earned a Ph.D. in Immunogenetics from King George’s Medical University, India, and currently serves as the HLA Analytical Supervisor and Director Assistant at Kashi Clinical Laboratory.
Since January 2025, Dr. Tripathi has been continuing an ASHI-approved HLA Director-in-Training clinical fellowship at Kashi Clinical Laboratories. Prior to this, Dr. Tripathi completed a two-year ASHI-accredited HLA Director-in-Training fellowship at Temple University Hospital, strengthening their clinical competencies in histocompatibility and immunogenetics for solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Tripathi worked for over 10 years as a Scientist/Sr. Analyst at the University of Calgary, Canada, and as a Visiting Research Scientist at HUMV in Spain.
Dr. Tripathi is an award-winning researcher with over 35 peer-reviewed publications, a book chapter, and active memberships in multiple scientific societies. His dedication to advancing transplant diagnostics and immunogenetics continues to guide his contributions in clinical HLA practice.
Since starting with Kashi Lab, Cong has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of consumers and patients, not only in the Portland-Metropolitan Area, but across the country.
Cong Nguyen is a licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist. After graduating from the MLS program of OHSU/OIT in 2018, he joined Kashi Lab in 2019 as a lab technician in the Genotyping department. In 2020, at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cong played an instrumental role in the set up and operation of the SARS-COV2 testing in our Virology Department. He was later promoted to lab supervisor and more recently, lab manager of Clinical Pathology & Genomics department where he supervises the general diagnostics, genotyping, virology and toxicology departments.
Russell Martin graduated Magna cum Laude from the Honors College of Arizona State University in 2004 with a B.S. in Biological Sciences.
During his college career, Russell Martin worked for four years in a university laboratory in the field of avian endocrinology. He began working at Kashi Clinical Laboratories in 2006 and has authored numerous papers and abstracts in the fields of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Russell is currently a Principal Scientist within the laboratory’s HLA department.
Logan began his biology career as an intern studying water birds on Alcatraz Island and volunteering at the Page Museum. In 2016, he joined a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, where his dedication and expertise led to his promotion to laboratory supervisor. Seeking further growth, Logan joined Kashi Clinical Laboratories in 2021, where he contributed to the development of the novel MMDx® test in the Transcriptomics department. In early 2024, he assumed leadership of MMDx®, focusing on its continued innovation, expansion, and streamlining to enhance its impact as a critical diagnostic tool. In 2025, Logan was promoted to Innovation Manager.
